From 16 October 2026, a 1.8% Payment Processing Fee (incl GST) appears on every Termina invoice. If you pay from a bank account, you get a bank payment discount of the same amount, so you pay nothing extra. Here's how it works.
Why is Termina adding a Payment Processing Fee?
From 1 October 2026, businesses can no longer add a separate surcharge to card payments. Card payments still cost us to process, so we're covering that cost with a 1.8% Payment Processing Fee on all invoices issued from 16 October 2026. If you pay by bank transfer or bank direct debit, you receive a bank payment discount equal to the full fee, so most customers won't pay anything extra.
How much is it?
1.8% of the invoice total, GST inclusive.
I pay by bank direct debit. Do I pay the fee?
No. The bank payment discount is applied on the same invoice and cancels the fee out. There's nothing you need to do. Any non-card transaction fees that already apply to your account are unchanged.
I pay by bank transfer. Do I pay the fee?
Not in effect. The fee appears on your invoice, and once we receive your bank payment we credit a matching bank payment discount to your next invoice. If it's your final invoice, we refund the discount instead. Any non-card transaction fees that already apply to your account are unchanged.
I pay by card. Do I pay the fee?
Yes. Card payments cost us to process, and the fee covers that. This includes direct debits that run from a card. If you'd rather not pay it, switch to bank direct debit (below).
Why isn't the bank payment discount taken off the invoice up front?
We can only apply it up front when we know in advance the payment will come from a bank account. That's the case for bank direct debit, so the discount is on the invoice itself. For bank transfers, we don't know how you'll pay until the money arrives, so the discount goes on the invoice after we receive your payment.
How do I switch from card to bank direct debit?
Set it up in your account at https://app.termina.io/account/admin. It takes a few minutes and applies from your next invoice.
I have a September invoice. What happens if I pay it by card in October?
The card surcharge rules apply to when you pay, not when the invoice was issued. Card payments made from 1 October 2026 won't carry a card surcharge. The Payment Processing Fee only appears on invoices issued from 16 October 2026, so it won't be added to your September invoice.
Does this change my energy rates?
No. Your energy rates and Termina's savings split are unchanged. The fee only covers the cost of processing payments.
